This volume contains the proceedings from the recent major conference on risk management in civil, mechanical and structural engineering, which was organized by the Health and Safety Executive in co-operation with the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The book demonstrates that benefits, over and above the immediate safety of the workforce, can be obtained through the application of risk management to any system, design or process. It provides a comprehensive insight into risk management by feference to what has already been done in the past, what is to come in the future, and to related topics such as innovation and life-cycle costing.
In-line with directives form the EU, the management of risk in the workplace will soon be required by UK regulations. The concept is not new, however; it has already been applied with tangible benefits, as is shown by the case studies drawn from THORP (Cumbria), the Channel Tunnel and motorway bridge maintenance. The book also deals with current research into risk management techniques and with minimizing safety and financial risks, by innovation and the application of life-cycle costing.
