This £2 billion project ranks among the largest civil engineering projects in the world. This special issue describes the critical first phase (IA) which will supply 18 m /s of water to the industrial heartland of South Africa, and 72 MW of electricity to Lesotho.
Written by senior members of the multinational project team, the papers cover the planning, project management, design and construction of phase IA including the 185m high concrete-arch Katse Dam, and 82 km long 5m diameter transfer and delivery tunnel and the 'Muela' hyropower station.
