The use of lime-stabilised soil columns and lime piles as suitable treatments for improving slope stability on the clay earthworks of motorways is under consideration by the DETR and the Highways Agency. Continuing on from the previous report (TRL 305), this report considers the qualities of laboratory trial mixes for lime-stabilised soil columns and lime piles. A variety of combinations containing clay, lime and cement were tested for strength and suitability for a full-scale field trial. The report discusses the composition of the optimum mix and makes recommendations for the field trial.
