The book more readable than most of the computing literature, my initial intention was to introduce all of the techniques as separate aspects of case studies in interpreation, diagnosis, design, planning and control. After deciding that diagnosis is simply a special case of interpreation, I had four distinct application areas to discuss, with the intention of introducing fundamental knowledge of tools and techniques that I needed to assume. Therefore I finally settled on dividing the book into two parts. Chapter 1to6 descrie the tools and techniques with appropriate examples, while chapters 7 to 10 look at some applications in detail.
