Most structural analysis is concerned with static behaviour, but there are many instances where vibration behaviour and dynamic response have to be taken into account. This is particularly so when an engineering structure is subjected to impact or sudden movement, or significant time-varying effects of walking pedestrians, moving machinery, vehicles, wind, tsunamis and earthquakes.

This book is unique among the many other books dealing with vibration and dynamics. It is divided into two parts. The first part covers all the basics, from the modeling of discrete single and multi degree-of-freedom systems, to mathematical formulations for continuous systems, both analytical and numerical. The second part introduces the mathematical concepts of group theory, and applies these to the vibration of various symmetric systems, demonstrating the power of this relatively new and novel computational approach. Considerations are extended to finite difference and finite element methods.

This is a two-in-one book. The first part is essential reading for all civil, structural and mechanical engineering students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) taking courses on vibration and dynamics. The second part appeals to postgraduate students, as well as researchers in the area of computational vibration analysis.
